~Mounting Disappointments~

Lenore and Rook could smell the aftermath of that night’s events long before they could see it. The smell of ash and blood rolled on the air, heavy and acrid. As they drew closer, thin tendrils of smoke curled into the brightening orange and pink sky, far more lovely than should be allowed after the night that had passed. When the hotel, or rather, what was left of it came into view, Lenore broke into a run.

It looked as if half the establishment had burned down. Charred jetties and orphaned quays sat less like an interconnected spider web now and more like broken teeth around the bay. People drifted to and fro like ghosts, covered in grey ash and soot. The usually turquoise blue waters of the bay were spoiled with floating debris, scorched bungalow pieces, and…

Merciful heavens, please don’t let that be a body, Lenore thought.

“This place is crawling with Enforcers,” she heard next to her.

She looked to see Rook running alongside her.

“They’re different here,” was all the comfort she could offer.

Lenore’s eyes searched frantically among the faces around her for someone, anyone, familiar. Where were her people?! Lenore spun, looking in every direction. Her breath came quicker, her heart racing.

Oh stars, oh stars, oh stars… she pleaded.

She placed a hand over her stomach, trying to halt the frigid spike of fear beginning to bore into her.

Rook’s voice was instantly beside her ear. “Calm down, little bird. What is it?”

“I don’t see them.” Her voice cracked. “Any of them. What if Mercy… what if they all… all because of me… Rook, what if they’re…”

Tears had begun to escape her eyes when a familiar voice rang out. She turned to see Zach trotting towards her, waving his arm above his head.

“Oh thank heavens!” Lenore cried.

She ran to meet him. She threw a hug around him, and Zach stood with his arms out to the sides uncertainly for a few moments before returning it.

“Thank goodness you’re alright! Where is everyone?” she asked.

“Split between the infirmary and Scholar Simra’s place,” Zach replied. “Where the bloody blazes have you been? Eamon’s about ready to tear down every building in this city to find you. Got into a proper row with Oya about it. Not focusing on the bigger picture, she said. Engineer Allen finally had to take ‘im outta the room.”

Lenore didn’t need to hear more and rushed off.
